MCS Board Approves Week-long Fall Break

Students, teachers and staff members of Marion Community Schools will get a week-long Fall Break in 2019 and 2020, following approval of the plan last night by the Marion School Board.

On a split vote, board members approved the longer Fall Break for the next two school years to see how it goes.  In the past, Fall Break was just a four-day weekend, but a recent survey of students and teachers showed more than 70-percent wanted the longer break.

The “Chronicle-Tribune” reports two school board members voted against the longer break because they feel some low-income students need to be at school because it provides two meals a day…which may be the only meals those students get during that time.

Meanwhile, school officials say they received nearly half-a-million dollars less in the Fall tax draw than they expected.  The lower amount was apparently due to less tax money being brought in from taxpayers in the district.
