The City of Peru will have one less police officer and one less firefighter for the rest of the year to make up a budget shortfall after city officials miscalculated how much raises would cost the city.
Officers and firefighters received a one-and-a-half-percent increase in their longevity pay as part of across-the-board raises approved for city workers that took effect this year.
But the pay increases will cost more than was though, so one police officer and one firefighter will be eliminated to make up for the shortfall.
