MPD: Marion man accidentally shoots himself in the hand, injury non-life threatening

Yesterday morning a 20-year-old Marion resident accidentally shot himself in the hand, according to Deputy Chief Stephen D. Dorsey.

At around 4:22 am, Marion Police responded to Marion General Hospital for a possible self-inflicted gunshot injury.

At the hospital, Jaylen Weaver, 20, reported that he drove his girlfriend’s vehicle to her home on Upton Ct. Prior to exiting the car, Weaver stated that he withdrew his Smith & Wesson .38 special revolver out of his pocket.

Weaver states he turned to his left, placed his left hand on the end of the muzzle and attempted to de-cock the hammer. Weaver said the gun discharged and the bullet entered and exited his left hand. But he was unsure as to where the bullet went.

Weaver had his cousin who was a passenger in the vehicle, Trevor Johnson, drive him to the hospital.

Weaver was uncooperative upon officers following up with the investigation, Dorsey said. His injury was non-life threatening.
