Twenty-seven Taylor University theatre students were among hundreds of college and university students from throughout the Midwest who attended the Region III Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in Madison, Wisconsin, earlier this month.
The event consisted of workshops and competitions, several of which led to awards for several of the Taylor students.
Senior Brielle Fowlkes received the RED Ace award for Representation, Equity and Diversity: Aspire Community Connections and Engagement, through the ASPIRE Leadership Initiative, a program which aims to launch a new generation of artistic and administrative leaders in the American theatre.
Senior Ethan Rice was a runner-up in the Institute of Theatre Journalism and Advocacy Program, which leads students under the tutelage of a professional theatre critic in exploring the ways that criticism, advocacy and writing can contribute unique voices to the theatre world.
Five Taylor students joined the 240 auditions for the Irene Ryan Scholarship, with three (Fowlkes, Madeline Logan, and Stephen Day) among the 45 semi-finalists. Day was one of 16 students who advanced to the final round.
“It was a really great opportunity to get audition experience and incredibly beneficial feedback from theatre professionals,” Day said.
Additionally, four Taylor BFA Musical Theatre Students (Madeline Logan, Brandt Maina, Andrew Baker and Hannah Embree) were chosen to take part in the Musical Theatre Intensive, with eight students participating in the Dance Intensive (Embree, Maina, Madeline Logan, Michael Pierce, Liz Carrier, and Victoria Koro).
Taylor University’s 2019 production of Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses also received Certificates of Merit for Excellence in Direction, Stage Management, Ensemble and Technical Direction, and was selected to participate in the Festival Costume Parade.
Taylor Theatre provides an immersive experience for audiences and participants by pursuing excellence on and off the stage, embracing difficulty and asking questions in pursuit of truth.
