The Grant County Sheriff’s Department is continuing to investigate the shooting death of 33-year-old Muncie resident Steven Nickell, according to Capt. Ed Beaty.
On Monday afternoon the Sheriff’s Department dispatch center received a call from a subject stating he had killed an intruder at a residence on the 6100 block of S. 500 East in the Gas City area.
Capt. Ed Beaty stated in a news release that the nature and cause of the shooting are still under investigation and any information that did not come from an official release from the Grant County Sheriff’s Department should only be regarded as speculation.
Beaty added that one of the two subjects taken into protective custody was 39-year-old Wabash resident Matthew Whitt who has been arrested on an unrelated parole violation charge.
Several interviews have been conducted and continue to be done, as well as the processing and collecting of evidence from the scene and other locations as it relates to this case.
An autopsy is pending on Nickell.
