Carmack found guilty of murder, faces life without parole

Almost two years after 10-year-old Skylea Carmack’s body was found stuffed in trash bags in a shed behind her family’s Gas City home, her stepmother, Amanda Carmack has been found guilty of her murder.

Amanda Carmack was convicted Friday of murder, neglect of a dependant result in death, domestic battery resulting in death and strangulation.

Monday, the jury that convicted Carmack found that she should be sentenced to life in prison without parole. She will be formally sentenced in Grant County Circuit Court on Sept. 15.

Carmack’s charges stem from an incident dating back to 2019. She’d reported Skylea as missing on Aug. 31, 2019. Local law enforcement agencies and communities came together and spent days searching for the girl until Carmack told police she’d strangled Skylea. Officers with Indiana State Police found Skylea’s body on Sept. 4, 2019.
