Grant County woman dies after dog attack

A Grant County woman has died after a dog attack, according to the Grant County Coroner’s Office.

According to a press release from Coroner Stephen Dorsey, first responders were called to 303 High St. in Matthews for a dog bite at approximately 2:12 p.m., Monday.

Dorsey said that Noah Roy reported he was in a bedroom in the home when he heard loud screams coming from the living room. He told police that the family dog, a pit bull, had attacked his mother, 69-year-old Kathleen Bertram.

According to Dorsey, Bertram was sitting with her three-year-old granddaughter in the living room when she fell and her granddaughter screamed. Officers say the dog then ran up and started biting Bertram’s neck.

First responders performed CPR and tried to render life-saving aid to Bertram, but due to the severity of her injuries, she died.

According to Dorsey, Marion Animal Control was called and they had to use a tranquilizer on the dog, who was still being aggressive, before removing it from the home.
