Senator Mike Braun says high healthcare costs are directly related to the quality of food Americans are consuming on a regular basis. In a Senate Agriculture subcommittee hearing on Tuesday — Braun talked about how food programs started in the late ’60s to help solve food insecurity have become slightly outdated because they focus on quantity of food as opposed to quality. He says if people can only afford to buy cheap, unhealthy food, they will end up paying more in the long run for healthcare. Braun wants the USDA to start focusing on ways to lower the cost of healthier food options.
