The Marion Giants will honor former coach and longtime athletic director Jack Colescott at their game against Mississinewa tonight.
According to school officials, Colescott served as a teacher, basketball coach, baseball coach, and athletic director at Marion High School over a 32-year period.
In his six seasons as head coach of the Giants basketball team, he transformed the program and set the Giants on the path to the seven state titles won after his tenure. One of his first moves, when he moved into the athletic director position, was to hire Washington’s coach, Bill Green, as his successor.
Colescott also hired Indiana High School Tennis Hall of Famer Bill Beekman, who would go on to lead the Giants to a tennis state championship in 1991.
And Colescott also served as an assistant baseball coach alongside head coach Mel Wysong as the Giants baseball team won the state championship in 1984.
He has been inducted into the Marion Athletics Hall of Fame, the Marion High School Hall of Distinction, the Grant County Sports Hall of Fame, and the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.
The varsity game is set to start at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, at Bill Green Arena. Colescott will be honored at halftime.
