Commissioners hold off on Health Board appointments

Several board and department officials, with the exception of two health board members, kept their positions after being reappointed by the Grant County Commissioners yesterday.

During their meeting, President Mark Bardsley said they’d received a recommendation to reappoint health board members Brandy Swanner and Dr. Barbara Irhke, whose terms both expire at the end of this month.

But Commissioner Ron Mowry wasn’t so sure about one appointee.

“In all candor, I have reservations about Barb Irhke right now,” Mowry said.

“I knew you had some reservations,” Bardsley said. “I think that they present themselves as a team covering two varying viewpoints, so we can discuss it, we can vote it, we can hold off and bring it back at the beginning of the year, but we’ll probably need to make appointments at our first meeting of the year if we don’t agree on something today.”

Mowry said he would personally prefer to wait so the commissioners voted to table the health board appointments until their January 3rd meeting.

Mowry declined to comment further on his decision or explain his reservations.

According to officials with the health department, Irhke has served on the board since 2006 and has been reappointed several times. In addition to her role on the health board, she teaches at Indiana Wesleyan University and serves as a research consultant for Marion Health with expertise in transcultural nursing, tropical health, gerontology, and nursing informatics.
