A car crash on Christmas Eve has killed two people and left several more injured.
According to Grant County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Ed Beaty, officers were notified of a two-vehicle crash on State Road 37 near 7300 South at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Dec. 24.
Beaty stated an off-duty detective notified officers and responded to the accident as well to find a small, two-door sedan on fire. The detective was able to enter the vehicle through the rear window, though, due to the fire, they couldn’t get the occupants out. Police reports state that after firefighters put out the fire, responders discovered two victims in the car. Officials have not yet released the victims’ names.
According to Beaty, while most occupants of the second vehicle, a GMC Yukon, sustained minor injuries, 34-year-old Thomas Farrell, of Elwood, had to be extricated from the front passenger side and airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital.
Investigations indicate that the sedan was driving southbound on State Road 37 when it drove left of center into the path of the northbound Yukon. Beaty stated the driver of the Yukon, 32-year-old Ashley Farrell, of Elwood, told police she tried to avoid the sedan. The front passenger side of the sedan hit the front passenger side of the Yukon. The sedan went east off the roadway, down an embankment and came to a rest facing southeast, with the driver’s side door pinned against a tree. The Yukon came to a rest facing south, along the west side of the roadway.
Investigations into this accident are ongoing.
